Let’s ask Tyler a few questions
Why did you start video game programming?
It has been my dream to make my own game since 1988 when I was first introduced to an NES (Nintendo). So when I found Unity, I decided I would do whatever it took to at least try to pursue my dream. I quickly learned that a video game needs massive amounts of code, so I tried for about 2 years to teach myself how to program. I still remember the day, after about 6 hours of staring at the code it suddenly seemed to just “click.” Since then I have been learning all I can about programming in general but mainly focused on what I needed to know regarding C#, Java, & MySQL to create my dream game.
Why did you name the game “Reign of Darkness?”
I toyed with a few different names but the name Reign of Darkness, my first pick, fit the theme well. The evil that man often brings upon himself is portrayed as a dark fog that pours across the land, an essence that flows from behind the veil. The fog separates the living from the dead and becomes known as the “The Black Plague.” A pestilence causing madness, sickness, and manifesting itself in vile forms to consume all that resist. In this mythical world, the darkness reigns supreme, drawing a line between good and evil.
Where did the idea for Reign of Darkness come from?
It has been a culmination of years of inspiration. But starting back in the 90’s I began writing down my thoughts and theorizing what I would do if I were to make a game. Inspired by some other great titles, and the macabre in general, I wanted to see a great battle for mankind in a world of darkness, for that truly epic feel while maintaining the freedom of choice for the players as many games are very restricting and don’t allow a player to become uniquely built. Many ideas and concepts are inspired by history itself primarily the dark ages, mythology, and lore. I have always enjoyed seeing true stories played out in a game environment, so it seemed to write itself.
